Residents Association Castlefields

A district of the county town Stafford, Staffordshire, UK

Broadband speeds vary for many reasons.

  • · Cable quality and length from the exchange
  • · Quality of Router
  • · Quality of Micro filter(s)
  • · Extraneous phone extension wiring connected to master socket (This is the most common cause of slow broadband speed)
  • · Extensions fitted without their own micro filter (This is the most common cause of intermittent broadband speed)
  • · Fax machine, Answer machine or Sky box fitted without a micro filter
  • Please register the speed you get on our Forum.
A good independent speed test site is Speedtest.net. Test your speed to the Maidenhead server so we have a true comparable timing. (Whilst designing this page I have tested my TalkTalk Broadband speed, results are Ping=19ms Download=9.55Mbps and Upload=0.86Mbps)

There is no fibre optic (Sky) installed on Castlefields to provide ultra fast Broadband to the house. We are stuck with copper wiring for the immediate future which should provide a service between 7 to 10 Mbps.

BT Infinity promises the earliest speed improvement by installing fibre optic links from the exchange to the local green junction box cabinets scattered round the estate. BT will respond to customer demand so please register your interest in BT Infinity. Enter your phone number or post code and select Check Now. The site will tell you that its not available in your area, please click the ‘Register Interest’ button. Fill out the resulting form and submit.

Mobile wireless Broadband ‘Dongles’ (NOT WiFi) provide a very variable performance depending on the provider (O2, Orange 3 etc.) and location. Just moving from one side to another of a room can result in drastic speed changes. Speedtest.net for Mobile phones, Android oriPhone.
Broadband via my 3 Android mobile phone is around Ping=195ms, Download=0.73Mbps and Upload=0.48Mbps. Both with intermittent peaks of 3Mbps.
